It’s not about the money, even when the money is great

Sunset at Epcot with Monorail
Our days come to an end one at a time.

A great friend shared this yesterday:

“My 21-year old cousin had just been in a motorcycle accident and died twice on the table, but he miraculously made it. Then i get the invitation from you…everyone was happy at your retirement party. A few days later at my company’s (near Disney World, Time Share, obsessively money and numbers driven culture) quarterly breakfast celebration, no one was happy. That’s when it hit me that it’s not about the money.”

A blinding flash of the obvious only becomes obvious well into our life, usually decades into it.

The temptation is to rationalize that it’s too late to transform.

At 13 years his senior, was honored that he thought i could offer sound perspective and wisdom.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

The fascination with fascination

Orlando based inspirational speakers
Waiting at LAX with our Son. He is the reason i began writing.

The fascination with fascination. Just over seven years ago, i began thinking about what would my life be like if i lived like i were dying?

To challenge the status quo – because it’s just a habit i cannot break – rather than think in terms of “only six months to live”, i landed on the idea of “what if you had 10 years left?”

Come June 8, there will be exactly three years left of that decade-long opportunity.

All i can think about is this:

What if i hadn’t begun this commitment? Where would the past seven years have taken me?

The paradox of self-confidence

Disney Customer Service Speakers
Walt Disney…you know he had to be thinking, “What if this doesn’t work?”

The paradox of self-confidence is that most (all the ones i know anyway) confident people have a quiet, yet relentless, battle with self-doubt.

You’re only as good as your last presentation, your last race, your last prayer.

No one cares what you did in the past, if what you are currently doing isn’t amazing.

It comes with the territory.

Confidence is like a fire, without constant attention to adding fuel, it will dim and quite quickly, extinguish.

Walt Disney had a dream

Disneyland construction photo
First photo taken yesterday in the Fairfield Inn lobby…heading out for a run.

Just like Martin Luther King, Jr had a dream, so did Walt Disney.

America celebrates today by closing government businesses and schools so we may have a conscious reminder to what MLK’s dream meant, and continues to mean, to every American.

And in our busy lives, many of us will recall only one thing today, that we enjoy having a paid holiday.

How do i know? Just a hunch, because that’s how i treated it for much of my working life.

The transformation came when i began teaching others about the power of a compelling vision. That was more than 15 years ago.

A non-Disney “Disney day”

McDonalds is open 24 hours a day.

Needed a wifi network that could handle a simple process – downloading photos to iCloud. Note the 4:46am at the top?

Starbucks was much closer (than McD’s) to Disney’s Grand Californian Resort.

The Disney Star Wars 10k began at 5:30am.

Arrived at Starbucks in the dark before 5am. Left at 7:15am (and daylight).

Writing five daily, differently-themed posts would be so much quicker and easier if it weren’t for my desire to add photos to help tell the story.

Photos are evidence that something happened the way it was written.

Without the photos, many writers default to, “Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.”

i literally despise that premise.

Being inside the storytelling (professional speaking) arena for 16+ years, i’m here to tell you it’s rampant. And i believe it’s criminal – the antithesis of building trust and offering hope.
