Ah, the bully. The bully never entered my mind.
Was thinking of people like Walt Disney - very confident on the outside, but on the inside, hard to say.
Bet President Obama, in all his media-presence confidence, has a challenge sleeping some nights.

Jeff,

If it weren't for me being a morning person, I would be brain-dead right now. :) And the coffee. A Casting Crowns, Kutless, and Caleb concert last night didn't get me home until late. Steven Curtis Chapman even made a surprise appearance (the group Caleb is his two sons).

You know, some of them hear my comments about insecurity with that "ah-ha" lightbulb look. It's like they never realized that behind that persona of arrogance stands a very insecure person, and possibly someone who doesn't even feel adequate within his or her own skin. One student said, "You know, I used to hate the guy in my office who is that way. I thought he was just a jerk of a personality. Now I am starting to feel sorry for him." I And yes, there are plenty of examples that come out in class - not only from my experiences, but many from theirs. Amazingly, it is relatively similar to the same personality of the bully - bringing down others to try to feel good about him or herself.

I think self-talk does help...and prayer talk. People often forget they are not alone in this walk called life!

Bob, thanks for your comment, bright and early this Saturday morning. (I just fixed three typos - guess who wasn't fully awake?)

How do your students react to this concept? And are you able to use any personal examples, or are there other examples?

You know, there's something to be said for positive self-talk. Maybe there is a hybrid in this newer medium called social media.

Classic case of nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Jeff,

In my Organizational Behavior class I teach, I try to lead them in a discussion about the difference between these above...and you are right with the Robert Collier quote. It has a lot to do with belief in yourself. The difference between confidence and arrogance or self-assured and boastful...it all boils down to insecurity. People who believe in their abilities to do something don't have to be arrogant - their abilities speak for themselves. But people insecure in themselves "talk up their game" to not only convince others they have the ability (and hide the truth), but to convince themselves.
